About

About the Clinical Educator Programme

The Clinical Education Programme (CEP) is for clinicians and academics who teach Edinburgh University medical students.

It is informal and interactive training that will help make sure your teaching is as effective and engaging as it can be.

As part of the CEP you can:

●      learn a range of teaching techniques

●      take part in group discussions

●      have your teaching observed and get feedback on it

●      get support to help you reflect on your teaching practice

How the CEP is structured

The 4 levels of the CEP build on one another. So you can use the workshops that you completed for the Introductory Level towards Level 1, Level 1 towards Level 2 and so on.

Completing the CEP

The CEP is flexible. You can complete the whole Programme, or select the workshops that are most relevant to you. Our workshops are delivered throughout the year at venues across South East Scotland.

You will have 3 years to complete the Programme up to level 2. However, you can do this within 12 months.

How to register for the CEP

Fill in the CEP registration form and send it to cep@ed.ac.uk.

How to book workshops

Use the Tutorial Booking System (TuBS) to find and book workshops.  You will need to select the CEP as one of your groups, then select an appropriate role.

You will be given access to online modules which cover some of the Framework Areas. We are not responsible for these modules. If you complete them, please send us copies of your certificates so we can ensure the evidence on your records is up to date.

Recognition of prior learning

If you have attended a course in the past 3 years which you think is similar to any part of our Programme, we may be able to recognise it as prior learning towards the CEP.

We can recognise most clinical education workshops and online modules. Some examples are:

●      STAR, SCOTS and Learnpro courses

●      Masters in Medical, Clinical or Surgical Education

●      Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in Medical, Clinical or Surgical Education

●      FHEA/FFSTed/FAcadMED etc.

●      Royal College Teach the Trainer or Train the Trainer courses

●      the Edinburgh Summer School in Clinical Education (ESSCE)

Send copies or scans of your completion certificate to us at cep@ed.ac.uk.

If you are not sure if the workshops or modules you have done would be recognised by us, just ask

Revalidation of the Clinical Educator Programme

Your Introductory Level, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 certification is valid for 5 years after you complete it.

To maintain your CEP status you must revalidate every 5 years.

Go to the Revalidation page for details of what is involved for the different levels.

You should be collecting evidence of the educational activities you have been involved in, and recording it on SOAR (Scottish Online Appraisal Resource) on an ongoing basis.
